Minutes of May 28th Meeting

Parish Pastoral Council Members & PLT Members held a joint meeting in the Church Hall on May 28, 2008

OPENING PRAYER:  “Bring Us To Life In Your Spirit” led by Fr. Mathieu   

    

COMMITTEE  REPORTS:

a.  Liturgy

            1) New Lectors

                        - two new lectors prepared & participating in schedule     

            2) Confirmation

                        - 3 Altar Servers called upon to serve at this Mass

            3) Mother’s Day

                        - roses handed out to mothers as they left 

            4) Father’s Day

                        - flowers to be handed out to dads

            5) Environment

                        - Mariette Hickey made new banners

                          for the Feast of Body & Blood of Christ

            6) Choir/Organist

                        - Stephanie St. Louis moving to Espanola                         

                          A motion put forward by Father Mathieu and seconded                            by Bruce Robillard that as a council we will vote on 

                          paying $80.00 to any organist  per celebration                                         including practice time.

                        - motion was unanimously rejected 12 to 0

 

b.  Christian Education 

            1) No Committee Chairperson for Christian Education

            2) Baptism – Co-ordinator John Terpstra

                        - Program on June 7th9 a.m. to 12 noon

                        - Baptisms on June 8th

                        - Last program for John – re-assigned to Kitchener

                        - Recognition                                                                             - gift certificate & card to be presented June 8th 

                        - New Coordinator urgently needed

            3)  Sacrament of First Eucharist

                        - Register completed by RoseMarie Bergeron            

            4)  Confirmation 

                        - 33 candidates confirmed on May 12th by Bishop Plouffe

                        - Candidate who dropped off because of health reasons

                           to be confirmed by Fr. Mathieu in June

                        - Registration is complete

                        - Confirmation Register

                        - Notation sent to Churches - registered in Baptismal Register

                        - Notation in our Baptismal Register

           

c. Social Justice

            1) Development & Peace Action Updates

                        - Earthquake in China  

                        - Cyclone in Burma

                        - Food Crisis – joint project with Foodgrains Bank

            2) Society of St. Vincent de Paul

                        - information Tues., June 10th at 7 p.m. at Diocesan Centre

            3) Parish Care Team

                        - Finlandia quarantine lifted – Rosary resumed

                        - Get Well Card sent to Don Finlan

                        - Mass for the Sick on May 21st attended by 78 people  

                     

d. C.W.L. 

            1) 70th Anniversary of St. John's CWL

                        - Special Mass celebrated wednesday, April 30th

                          (Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel)

- 76 persons in attendance

- reception in the Church Hall     

            2) 88th Convention

                        - 15 members attended - held in North Bay April 25, 26, 27   

                        - 89th Convention next year held in Sudbury                      

            3) Quilt

                        - tickets for sale

            4) Booklets of Prayers

                        - given to Parish for Shut-Ins

            5) Birthright Shower

                        - held at May meeting

            6) Rosary at Grotto

                        - Crowning of Mary & meditated Rosary held on May 15th 

                           (35 people in attendance)

                        - followed by refreshments in the Church Hall        

            7) Wind-up Social

                        - June 2nd - Pinning Ceremony

            8)  Next meeting

                        - in September   

 

e. Youth – no report 

 

f.  Property & Maintenance      

            1) Spring Clean-up 

                        - all leaves raked by Don Finlan  

                        - next Fall & Spring (clean-up blitz)

                        - Don fell at home and broke his arm 

            2) Leaves Dumped on Edge of Parking Lot   

- have to be removed

- Harold Morin will allow us to use his property

- blitz to be organized to remove them

            3) Parking Lot

                        - pot holes to be filled in

                        - blitz to be organized

            4) Rectory Window Broken

                        - has been ordered - estimated cost - $700.00 to $800.00

            5) Spot Light at Grotto

                        - has been turned off

            6) Fluorescent Bulbs

                        - 8 bulbs replaced by Jim Kirwan in Sacristy & Hall

            7) Grounds

                        - preparation for planting by Jim Gomm & Doreen Merkas

            8) Get Well Card

                        - to be sent to Don Finlan   

 

g.  Social 

            1) Parish Breakfast

                        - held on April 19th – 107 persons attended

                        - story and photos on our website

                        - surplus funds handed over to Father Mathieu

            2) Annual Parish Spaghetti Supper

                        - will be held in October (date to be confirmed) 

            3) Parish Christmas Potluck Supper

                        - usually held in early December

                          (CWL Christmas Supper also held at that time)

                       

h.  DeoWeb 

            1) Reflection Corner

                - great resource for reflection in our daily life (secular & spiritual)

            2) DVD

                - pictures on website (to be updated this summer)

            3) Material Welcomed

                - update from chairpersons on their ministries would be welcomed

                - thanks to Cathy Gomm who posts CWL & Social accounts

                - thanks to Cathy Gomm & Edee Kirwan who send photos 

                  (Parish History)

            4) Suggestions Welcomed

                        - to make the website more people friendly & interesting

 

NEW BUSINESS: 

a) Review of Constitution

            1) No changes made

b)  Parish Council Elections

            1) Rachel Corbett appointed for 1 year term            

            2) Keith Argent acclaimed for a 3 year term  

            3) Marilyn Schroeder & Harvey Quackenbush begin 2nd term 

            4) Jo-Anne Joly to be replaced next year

            5) Steering Committee is now dissolved

c) Proposed Agenda

            1) No meeting in August

d) Baptismal Program

            1) New Coordinator required
