DEVELOPMENT & PEACE SOLIDARITY VISITOR

Our Solidarity Visitor, Pedro Landa of Caritas Tegucigalpa in Honduras, asked me to keep you informed about their efforts to reform mining law in Honduras. He is more confident about the possibility of success because of the support he got on his visit to Canada this year (and the UK last year).

Some of the main points from the article that appeared in El Heraldo, a Honduran national newspaper:

-          Congressman Arnoldo Aviles brought up the need for reform to mining legislation (Cardinal Rodriguez had addressed Congress on this topic in March 08) in the press.

-          Pedro and others (he doesn’t specify exactly who) will participate in a national assembly with all the mayors in the country on April 8. One of the items on the agenda is mining reform.

-          On April 17th, a national mobilization is planned by a broad coalition of popular groups: one of the items in their demands is mining reform.

-          Pedro suggests that it might be an opportune moment for the Canadian and British parliamentarians (remember when Alexa McDonough visited Honduras?) to send another letter to the Honduran government.

-          Caritas, the communities they work with in the Siria Valley and a number of NGOs are meeting to generate a work plan that includes collection documentation on violations by companies, to present to the Interamerican Commission on Human Rights, continued work on Entremares’ closure plan with help from a group in Peru and medical follow-up for people who have been contaminated by heavy metals (the government has done nothing).

-          The article in El Heraldo is about plans to make sure mining companies pay taxes at a fair rate.

As you can see, our partners and their partners in Honduras have been busy!
